Raphael Varane could be ruled out for rest of the season

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane could miss the rest of the season, according to a report from Sunday People

The former Real Madrid defender picked up an injury during United’s Europa League clash with Sevilla at Old Trafford, and it is now feared that he could be out for a long time.

The French defender has had scans on his ankle and Sunday People (23 April, page 60) claim he could be out for up to six weeks.

United’s medical staff are hopeful that Varane could recover before the FA Cup final if they beat Brighton in the semi-final at Wembley. The Red Devils will also miss Lisandro Martinez who won’t feature again this season.

Raphael Varane injury – massive blow for Man Utd

Since moving from Real Madrid two seasons ago, Varane has become a key player for the Red Devils.

He has shown imperious form this season, but his fitness remains a major issue. He has been suffering from an ankle injury for a while and has retired from international football mainly to protect himself from further injury damage.

The news will come as a massive blow for the club. If he is out for around six weeks, it means the defender will miss United’s next eight crucial Premier League games.

In the absence of both Varane and Martinez, Erik ten Hag will have to pin hopes on the partnership of Maguire and Victor Lindelof.

Maguire has come under strong criticism from pundits and fans for his poor performances in the Europa League against Sevilla, but the United skipper needs to step up now.

There are suggestions that United could sell the likes of Maguire, Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Phil Jones in the summer window as Ten Hag will look to revamp the squad to his own taste.
