While discussions have gone on for quite some time, it appears that Cyriel Dessers will be a Rangers player. The Scottish giants will sign the Nigerian from Cremonese.
According to Sven Claes, Dessers will complete his medical over the next two days and then sign for Rangers. As for the fee, Cremonese will receive €5m for the striker.
It was a disappointing campaign for Cremonese, as the club finished 19th in the Serie A. They will return to Serie B after a year in the top flight. As for Dessers, he scored seven times in 29 matches for the Italian club.
Throughout his career, the 28-year-old striker has primarily played in Netherlands and Belgium. His most notable season came in 2021/22, where he scored 10 goals in 13 Europa Conference League games to lead Feyenoord to the final.
The Gers have been negotiating for Dessers for about a month, shortly after their season finished. The Light Blues finished second in Scotland for the second year running.
At the time of writing, this will be Rangers’ sixth signing of the summer, having secured Jack Butland (from Crystal Palace), Abdallah Sima (Brighton, on loan), Kieran Dowell (Norwich), Dujon Sterling (Chelsea), and Sam Lammers (Atalanta).
The Glasgow-based side will compete in the Champions League third qualifying round this summer, aiming to reach the group stage for the second consecutive year.
As a result of this move, this will be Dessers’ fourth season playing European football. Excluding the previously-mentioned Feyenoord, he did the same with Genk, Sporting Lokeren, and Utrecht.
Dessers will sign a four-year contract with Rangers, which runs until 2027.
