Newcastle United are interested in signing Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse this summer, according to The Athletic.
With a season in the UEFA Champions League on the horizon, the Magpies are keen to add quality to their squad in various positions, including in central midfield.
Newcastle have identified Southampton captain Ward-Prowse as a potential option to sign in central midfield. The 28-year-old has competed at a high level throughout his Premier League career with the Saints.
The Magpies are looking to take advantage of the Saints’ relegation and try to sign their captain Ward-Prowse, who has a valuation of around £32.5m. The England international is, however, expected to cost a lot more as Southampton are keen not to sell their players for cheap.
Newcastle news: James Ward-Prowse on Magpies radar
Newcastle had problems in midfield during the 2022-23 season and were forced to play Brazilian striker Joelinton in the position. While he did well with his ball-carrying and attacking, he lacked the spatial awareness of a natural midfielder.
Ward-Prowse will be the perfect solution to the Magpies’ midfield problems and will instantly provide the platform for Bruno Guimaraes to wreak havoc in a more advanced midfield role.
A full England international and experienced midfielder, Ward-Prowse is only behind David Beckham for direct free-kick goals in Premier League history. The 28-year-old has an impressive passing range and is a set-piece expert.
Ward-Prowse fits the bill as a low-risk signing for Newcastle due to his extensive Premier League experience and proven quality. The midfielder will be a good addition to Eddie Howe’s side as they navigate their way around four competitions in 2023-24.
