Newcastle United are one of several clubs closely monitoring Southampton’s midfielder, Carlos Alcaraz, as reported by Talk Sport.
The Magpies were among the teams to swoop on Southampton in the summer, taking Tino Livramento back to the Premier League in a £32m move following the Saints’ relegation last season.
Newcastle inquired about the availability of Alcaraz last summer with Eddie Howe keen on the player. But a deal did not come to fruition, and Alcaraz remained at St. Mary’s Stadium.
The Argentine has struggled to secure a spot in Southampton’s starting lineup this season despite the team’s recent struggles with three consecutive losses. He has only started three Championship matches thus far.
Southampton signed Alcaraz from Racing Club for £12 million last season, and Team Talk reveal that the Saints would require an offer in the vicinity of £20 million for the 20-year-old.
Although Alcaraz is yet to solidify his place as a regular starter under Russel Martin’s led Southampton team, there’s little doubt about his potential to become a key figure for the team in the future.
Newcastle’s season began on a somewhat shaky note, with just two wins in their first five Premier League matches. However, it’s crucial to consider that their losses came at the hands of formidable opponents such as Manchester City, Liverpool, and the high-flying Brighton. This has done little to dampen the spirits of the Toon Army.
The Magpies are set to face Sheffield United at Bramall Lane this weekend, following a promising period that saw them break a three-game Premier League losing streak by defeating Brentford and holding Milan to a goalless draw in the UEFA Champions League opener at San Siro.
