Legendary Italian defender Leonardo Bonucci is keen on spending the final season of his professional career at Newcastle United, according to a report from Daily Mail.
Juventus great Bonucci announced earlier in the year that he intends to retire in 2024 after a glittering career that has seen him make over 500 appearances for the Bianconeri across two spells. The 36-year-old has been approached by Saudi and MLS clubs but has no interest in moving there.
Newcastle have reached the UEFA Champions League for the first time in two decades and have signed Italian star Sandro Tonali. Bonucci has made it clear that he will be open to becoming a part of their journey in his final professional season.
Initial conversations have taken place between Bonucci’s representatives and Newcastle over the move, although talks are not advanced as of yet.
Leonardo Bonucci move a real possibility for Newcastle United
Newcastle are in the market for centre-back cover this summer and have been linked with David Hancko, Goncalo Inacio and several others. A deal for Bonucci will appeal to the Magpies.
Bonucci is a seasoned winner, having lifted the Scudetto nine times in his career in addition to leading Italy to Euro 2020 glory. The 36-year-old played 26 times across all competitions for the Bianconeri last season due to a number of injuries. They are prepared to let him leave for free out of respect if he gets any offers.
Newcastle will be tempted by the possibility of adding quality and leadership to their backline in a fell swoop. They will look at Thiago Silva’s 2020 move to Chelsea as a similar one to this one, and the Brazilian helped create an impressive backline for the Blues. Bonucci will be a great addition to the Magpies this summer.
