The future of Real Madrid’s first-choice left-back Ferland Mendy is reportedly up in the air after an injury-ridden season.
According to a report from the Spanish news outlet MARCA, the arrival of Fran Garcia from Rayo Vallecano next season will displace Ferland Mendy from his guaranteed starting role in the Real Madrid lineup.
The Frenchman had a horrific campaign with Los Blancos as he was out for around 90 days after injuring his Achilles heel. He missed the most games (24) among the squad during that period and his injuries have become a recurring issue for the club.
In the previous three seasons, Mendy faced the same problem with his Achilles heel and has taken a combined 277 days off sidelined with injury.
Due to these reasons, the Real Madrid management is weighing up their future with the 27-year-old full-back who has celebrated some ecstatic moments with the team, including winning the Champions League.
Mendy’s contract expires in the summer of 2025 and a decision to sell him this summer would fetch a sizeable amount for Real Madrid as they have already covered themselves with the signing of academy graduate Fran Garcia.
Carlo Ancelotti has experimented with Nacho Fernandez, David Alaba and Eduardo Camavinga in the left-back position in the absence of Mendy this season but the Italian coach knows that he will be needing a natural for the role in the future.
Camavinga has covered for the role quite adequately this season and demonstrated his versatility but his future lies in his characteristic midfield position, to develop and become a star there.
If the departure of Ferland Mendy goes through this summer, the Spanish giants are likely to bring in another player for the left-back role in addition to Garcia.
